Unveiling the Power of Diversity: A Journey of Resilience and Opportunity
Picture this a 38-year-old researcher, driven by passion and a firm spirit, navigating the uncharted territory of a Diversity Assay. Now, let's be honest; this was uncharted waters for me. Writing about oneself is a complex task, as we all have our unique paths in science and our individual struggles. I wanted to avoid sounding like I was complaining or seeking sympathy, for that's not who I am. Nevertheless, crafting this document became a reflective exercise that took up a significant portion of my application time.
I had never written a Diversity Assay before, and uncertainty materialized over me like a persistent shadow. I began with just a sentence or two per day, carefully contemplating my journey, how I perceived it from an external standpoint, and what truly inspired me. Piece by piece, the puzzle started to take shape. The document became a window into my innermost thoughts and experiences, a testament to the person I have become.
Growing up in a poor neighborhood, expectations were low. Society didn't anticipate much from someone like me. However, my parents, despite having only elementary education, understood the power of education in unlocking doors of opportunity. My sister paved the way as one of the first graduates in our family, and I, I became the first to earn a PhD. The road to university was daunting, as I never attended the best schools and felt unprepared. But, despite the lack of a mentor and the need to figure things out on my own, I pursue a career in the STEM field.
During my undergraduate studies my PhD supervisor saw potential in me that no one else had recognized. She planted a tiny seed of belief, stating, "Carina would make a good researcher." That seed sprouted during a transformative experience in Paris. My supervisor provided me with an opportunity to attend a workshop, marking my first flight on an airplane. It was a nerve-wracking experience, but it empowered me and nurtured the seed of possibility.
Winning the L'Oréal Award brought immense joy, and it shed light on my work. However, it is rarely mentioned in my evaluations, perhaps because it is a prize for women. Instead of becoming disheartened, I used it as motivation to work harder and let my accomplishments speak for themselves. I keep showing up.
Crafting the Diversity Assay allowed me to delve into my own story, to explore the depths of my resilience and the impact of my background on my journey. It was a sincere and introspective endeavor. Although writing about oneself may feel uncomfortable, it offers an opportunity for growth and self-awareness.
So, remember, embrace the challenge of the Diversity Assay. Let your authentic voice shine through and reflect on the diverse tapestry that has shaped your journey. We all have unique stories to tell, and it is in sharing these stories that we inspire others and pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse scientific community.
In the end, the Diversity Assay became one of the most honest documents I have ever written. It encapsulated my journey, my resilience, and the unwavering determination that fuels my pursuit of knowledge. For in the face of adversity, there is strength, and in the pursuit of diversity, there is progress.
