Embarking on a Fulbright Journey: My Why and How
Picture this: a 38-year-old with a restless spirit, an insatiable thirst for adventure, and a burning question in mind - what more can I do? Yes, I know, age is just a number, but it got me thinking. Shouldn't life be a perpetual quest for new experiences, opportunities, and personal growth? Much like Bridget Jones serenading herself with “All by Myself”, there are moments when I find myself all alone in the lab, surrounded by test tubes and RB flasks. And at the end of a long week, I often unwind with a well-deserved glass of gin and tonic, pondering the mysteries of academia and the excitement that lies ahead. Bridget Jones may have sought love and self-discovery, but for me, it's the pursuit of knowledge, cultural exchange, and a Fulbright grant that ignite my journey.
Behind my decision to apply for a Fulbright grant lies a mix of motivations and reflections on the academic landscape. One driving force is the need to enhance my CV with an international experience, as I've noticed how such exposure is often viewed favorably in evaluations. It's disheartening to witness how my worth as a researcher can sometimes be reduced to a “bunch” of checkboxes, with evaluators seeking specific attributes that may not necessarily reflect my true capabilities or potential.
Yet, as I explore this topic further, I recognize that this narrow vision of academic paths and the emphasis on studying abroad may not align with everyone's journey. The world of science is diverse, and there are numerous paths to success. Not everyone has the means or opportunities to study abroad, and it's crucial to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of researchers from various backgrounds and locations.
Moreover, the increasingly multicultural nature of research groups challenges the assumption that outstanding work can only be accomplished within top institutions abroad. The movement toward work-life balance further highlights the complexity of the situation, as it raises important questions about how we can advocate for a harmonious integration of personal and professional lives while simultaneously imposing the expectation on researchers to uproot themselves from their friends and families. This dichotomy challenges us to reevaluate the traditional notions of success and achievement in academia, considering the unique circumstances, choices, and support systems of individuals striving to balance their personal and professional obligations.
Nevertheless, despite these concerns, I believe that embarking on this Fulbright journey will be an enriching experience for me. It will grant me the opportunity to immerse myself in a different academic culture, collaborate with talented scholars, and gain new perspectives that can undoubtedly enhance my research and personal growth. Perhaps by the end of this journey, my perspective on the value of international experiences in academia will have evolved, allowing me to contribute to the ongoing discussions surrounding these topics.
The Fulbright Program, renowned for its commitment to promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchange, offers an unparalleled opportunity for scholars and researchers, like me, to engage in impactful research experiences in the United States. As an IVLP and a CAS Future Leader alumna, my personal connection and admiration for the USA make this Fulbright award a truly meaningful step in furthering my professional and personal goals.
The first time I stumbled upon the Fulbright program for scholars and researchers, I was immediately drawn to its remarkable opportunities. However, caught up in the whirlwind of my research endeavors, I found myself racing against time to complete a comprehensive application. Balancing my responsibilities as a researcher, constantly applying for grants and research funding, left me with a limited window to focus on the Fulbright application. Regrettably, I was unable to submit my application during that initial attempt, especially since I hadn't yet solidified my research work destination. Nevertheless, the experience taught me valuable lessons. Armed with a newfound understanding of the importance of the host institution and project proposal, I embarked on my second application with greater clarity. This time, I had a specific host institution in mind, which helped shape the objectives and motivation behind my proposed project.
As a Junior Researcher in Portugal, I take pride in the recognition and accomplishments I have achieved throughout my journey. I have been honored with prestigious awards such as the L’Oréal award for women in science and have had the privilege of participating in well-regarded programs like the IVLP and the CAS Future Leaders program. While my CV may not boast an extensive list of publications, I take great pride in being the corresponding author for several of my papers, a responsibility I have held since a young age and have instilled in me a deep appreciation for independent research and the pursuit of innovative ideas. I embrace the idea that true innovation and progress often emerge from the passion and dedication of individuals working diligently, even in less recognized environments. It is this dedication, coupled with my drive for knowledge and growth, that fuels my pursuit of excellence in research.
In sharing my background, I aim to share the belief that selection for the Fulbright program should not be solely predicated on an outstanding CV, but rather on the potential, enthusiasm, and unique perspectives each applicant brings. By embracing the diverse pathways within science, we foster a richer and more inclusive academic community that values and appreciates the myriad of contributions made by researchers at all stages of their careers.
My expectations for the Fulbright program are filled with excitement and a thirst for knowledge. I look forward to immersing myself in a new environment, both academically and culturally. I hope to broaden my horizons by learning new concepts, techniques, and methodologies within my research field. Additionally, I am eager to explore the diverse culture, visit museums, and discover new places that Athens and the United States have to offer. The opportunity to work in a different laboratory setting will enable me to gain invaluable insights, share my own laboratory skills and experiences, and collaborate with researchers. Ultimately, my goal is to foster meaningful connections, expand my intellectual horizons, and return to Portugal with a wealth of new knowledge and experiences to contribute to the scientific community.
In conclusion, just like Bridget Jones embarked on her humorous and transformative journey, I am thrilled to embark on my own Fulbright adventure. I am excited to document and share my experiences, challenges, and growth through this blog, capturing the essence of my journey from the initial application process to my time in the United States. Through this platform, I aim to inform, inspire, and entertain readers as I navigate the unfamiliar, embrace new perspectives, and pursue academic and personal growth.
